As the FC Pres at Halstrom Academy San Diego, Alaina started her club with the basics of hand sewing, then moved to fashion sketching.
We are so excited to be a part of this fashion community!
Tell us a bit about yourself: I was born in Washington State, grew up in the countryside of England, and for the past seven years have been a California resident. I love art, fashion, and field hockey. I play classical guitar, and I’m student body president at my school. I have always had an interest in fashion. My primary school in England had a uniform, and I basically did everything in my power to personalize it! I got patterned tights, sewed my own uniform pieces, and actually ended up starting a few trends!
How did you get involved in Fashion Club? My school is very small and did not have a Fashion Club, so I founded it!
What kinds of activities do you do at your club meetings? Our club has a wide array of interests, be it fashion, trends, costumes, or graphic design. We began this year learning the basics of hand sewing, and then moved on to fashion sketching, trend spotting, and designing. Some members of our club are designing costume pieces and masks, and others are more interested in high fashion today, and trends. By the end of the year, each member is hoping to have upcycled an existing garment into something completely new and original.
What is one of your proudest accomplishments? I ran a half marathon in December! Even though it didn’t go quite as well as I’d hoped and I hurt my knee at mile nine, I pushed through and finished strong. I have asthma and some other health issues and never thought I would be able to do this, so finishing was a huge triumph for me!
What’s a fashion trend you’re loving right now? Right now I am in love with a pair of elephant pants I got from TheElephantPants.com. They are from Thailand and raise money for elephant conservation, so I feel good about buying them too! My pair is lilac and grey blue with an elephant pattern and is perfect for spring. They are so comfortable, and I am really enjoying the challenge of working bold harem pants into my daily wardrobe.
What upcoming activities do you have planned for your club? Right now we are making style boards using old magazines. We have several issues of Teen Vogue and Seventeen from 2009/2010, and we have modern Vogue, and other lifestyle magazine issues. In the future, we are planning on making costume pieces and possibly putting together a collection ideas with designs, fabric swatches, and inspiration pages.
Do you have plans to attend FIDM? I have been accepted into UC Davis and Cal Poly SLO, so I am deciding between them. I would love to do a post-grad program at FIDM to continue my education in design.
What are your career goals? I want to study art and design in college, and I could see myself going into any professional career in the fine arts. I have a passion for art, graphics, and fashion. I hope to find my career path in college, once I’ve explored different career options more. At the moment, I am really interested in animation, magazine editing, or perhaps package/marketing design.
Anything else you’d like to share? Halstrom Academy is a small private school with chapters all over California. My school has about 12 full time students but I got basically everyone to join in with our FIDM Fashion Club! Even though we have a small amount of people, we are really passionate about our club. We find ways to do small scale meaningful projects, and it also allows us to go on field trips. We are so excited to be a part of this fashion community!
