FIDM Interior Design Student Anna Giannulli-Chavez talks about her new YouTube channel.
What inspired you to start your channel? Anyone who knows me, knows how much I love a good project. Whether it be decorating my apartment, hosting friends and family, or attempting to save every animal that finds its way to me, I always have fun. So I thought, what better way to share that creativity with the world than through YouTube.
Tell us about some of your most popular videos: My most popular videos thus far have been my channel trailer and a video I made about DIY flower bouquets. My channel trailer was the most fun to film and edit, and I worked on it for about a month before I decided that it was ready to go up. As for the DIY flower bouquet video, I think that it was the perfect start to my YouTube career and a quick glimpse of my overall aesthetic.
What do you love most about being a YouTuber? The community. I have been overwhelmed with positivity and support since I began this journey, and feel so lucky to be a part of it. Seeing my DIYs come to life and inspire others is so much fun to watch!
What are the biggest challenges? The most challenging part is making the time to brainstorm, film, and edit each video. Although my episodes may be as short as two minutes, they take about nine hours to put together. From filming each step on my own and recording voiceovers, to editing, tagging, and uploading, it is a process that takes time.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to be a vlogger? Go for it!! It is not easy to put yourself out there, but trust me it is worth it! I was so nervous before I started my channel and wondered what people might think. I took the leap and was astounded by all of the positivity I received. Today, I get to share my creative ideas with amazing people who I might never have met otherwise.
What’s something people don’t normally know about you? Although I’ve always had a passion for interior design, many people don’t know that I went to school for two years to become an elementary school teacher. I grew up babysitting and volunteering in kid’s classrooms and thought that teaching was the perfect job for me. In hindsight, as much as I love kids, I found myself most excited about decorating a classroom. With a little push from my best friend, I checked out FIDM and fell in love! It instantly became clear what I was supposed to be doing all along.
Tell us about your major at FIDM: The Interior Design major at FIDM is rather small compared to the other majors offered. It is a very hands on style of learning that has made it so easy to learn! I love that my teachers work in the industry and are able to share first hand knowledge with us.
How is FIDM helping you achieve your career goals? I had no idea how incredibly connected FIDM was with outside careers. I am entering my second quarter and already have an internship with one of LA’s largest design centers. It is so exciting to be working towards my career each and every day!
Anything else you’d like to share? Growing up, my mom would always say, “Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life.” I am learning just how true that statement is, each and every day.
