Their recent meeting got super creative!
We chatted with Bloomington High School North FIDM Fashion Club President Doria Day to learn more about their crafty meeting activity!
How did you become President of your Fashion Club?
After my freshman year of high school, I saw the need for a Fashion Club at my school. So, I founded our very own BHSN Fashion Club and have been the president ever since. It wasn’t until this year (my senior year) that we became an official FIDM Fashion Club!
Tell us about the recent Unconventional Materials Challenge your club hosted.
To prep for our second meeting, I thought it’d be fun to actually design something and put it together for our members. And since sewing can be challenging, I thought not only would our Unconventional Materials Challenge be easier for members, but also cost effective.
I ran to the dollar store before our meeting and got a few things I thought would be interesting to design with, such as tablecloths, rope, fringed tassel paper, etc. We then had our members utilize these materials in their designs and assemble them using tape, string, staples, and glue. We used miscellaneous figures from around the drawing room and these were some of our results!
What other activities do you have in mind for future meetings?
I’m so excited for our upcoming meetings and a few activities I’ve planned are making DIY Charm Bracelets/Necklaces, an Acid Washing Tutorial, Denim Painting, and DIY FIDM Fashion Club Tees!
How do you go about recruiting members?
For every meeting, we make personalized, hand-drawn posters that we then print on colorful paper and poster the school with to attract new members. We also put a little snippet in the announcements.
What are your goals as an official FIDM Fashion Club President?
My goals for our Fashion Club is to grow membership numbers as well as engagement with the school. My goals for myself are to finish up my college apps for FIDM and other art and design schools and to make more time for my sewing and designing outside of school.
