Tap into your design style by way of your favorite ice cream? Yes.
Erica Williams, a costume designer for Disney, says you can reveal your unique design style just by describing what you like about your favorite ice cream! This is what Erica had to say in a recent interview by FC President Serena Abel…
One of the most difficult things to put into words as a new designer is your own core design statement—essentially the common thread between all of your work that makes your designs YOURS. It’s way too easy to overthink it! One of the simplest ways to figure this out is through your favorite ice cream. Weird right? How does that have anything to do with design? I’ll tell you how…
Ask everyone in your FIDM Fashion Club to write down their favorite ice cream. Then ask them to write down WHAT they like about it and why (but don’t reveal anything else about the exercise, just ask them to think about those two things), then have them share out loud.
For example, my favorite ice cream is Stephen Colbert’s AmeriCone Dream by Ben & Jerry’s. Why? Well, I like that it has classic ice cream ingredients, but reimagined and presented in a new and interesting way. I love the combination of different textures, especially with the crunchy waffle cone, etc.
Then ask everyone to go back through their list and circle what could apply to design. (Ahh the big reveal of why this is actually relevant!)
For me, it instantly clicked—all of my work is heavily inspired by historical fashion, but reinterpreted for a modern world, and even mixing time periods! And texture! Texture is everything to me! All of my designs have mixed textures that could tell a story on their own. I know it sounds silly, but deep down we each like things for specific reason, and sometimes all you need is a little ice cream to find out why.
