This talented student just graduated from ALIEF Hastings High School and plans to pursue a career as a fashion designer and professor.
Fashion Club President Nakai Hill designed and constructed an entire collection for her school’s annual spring fashion show.
What was the inspiration behind your collection? The inspiration behind my collection rooted from an old Polaroid of these two outfits my grandmother had made for her and my mother back in the ‘80s.
When I found the photo, my mind erupted with a range of different ideas and concepts—I couldn’t stop staring at the photo. I remember trying to envision how the fabric would move as my mother glided with elegance, or what went through my grandmother’s head while she was picking out fabric for “just another project.”
This powerhouse duo means the world to me, so I decided that I wanted to pay homage to the eclectic glamour the two radiated, the champagne gold and stark black arrangement emulated the soft yet strong qualities they both carried.
How long did it take you to make one garment? Well I was only able to work on my collection during class two hours a day, so the complete construction took about three weeks.
How long to make the entire collection? It took around four months. I have attachment issues when it comes to my designs.
How did you learn how to design clothing? I don’t mean to sound arrogant, but I didn’t learn how to design. I was always artistic from an early age, so when I picked up sewing, the design aspect came naturally.
How did you learn how to sew? My grandmother is a seamstress. I was about 12 years old, visiting her one day while she was working on another one of her projects as usual. I was curious about what she was doing so I asked, “What is that thing [sewing machine] called?” Then from that day on I was learning how to sew.
Have you ever entered a fashion competition? Of course! I love a good competition.
