We caught up with FC Advisors Gloria Vander Laan and Araceli Ramirez to get the story.
Madera South High School FIDM Fashion Club Advisors Gloria Vander Laan and Araceli Ramirez raised more than $1,000 from their 2nd Annual Fashion Show, “The World Is Your Runway,” to bring 44 of their Fashion Club members to attend the FIDM DEBUT Runway Show this spring.
Tell us about your show: Last year’s fashion show was such a success we decided to do it again this year. Last year’s models and club members were looking forward to another one! We held three auditions for students to try out as models. I pulled four different staff members from our school to be judges. (To avoid favoritism, the advisors or club officers should not be judges.) After a few days of scoring we posted the models’ ID numbers for those who made it. We accepted all 42 of them! Some of the busy students opted out and we ended up with 35. I really enjoy incorporating the many talents and clubs in and at our shows. We also incorporate the many different stores and businesses.
How many looks? We had about 12 looks. Business attire from our Mock Closet, streetwear, formal prom, casual, thrift store outfits, western wear, and their own outfits. We also included Jpop, Nigerian looks, and Indian Saris.
Where did you get the clothes? Most styles were borrowed from local shops, but some students modeled their own clothes.
What did you like the most about putting together a show like this? As an advisor, I really enjoyed establishing relationships with the students, the school staff, and other businesses in our town. I tell the club members that whatever relationships you establish now in life will affect your future. Walk with dignity and confidence and be true to others and yourself.
What was the biggest challenge? The practices were challenging. To be able to have all the models there at once was almost impossible. Most students are very busy with other clubs, study, and sports. With the number of models we had, it really was a big challenge. So, next year we will divide them into two groups, with group A practicing Monday and Wednesday, and group B on Tuesday and Thursday, for instance. When planning a show, make sure to incorporate the many talents you have at your school and town.
