We caught up with Natalia López Co-President of Queen Creek High School FIDM Fashion Club who recently attended Fashion Club Day Arizona held at FABRIC in Tempe.
As a senior I found this opportunity to be super fun as well as informative. This was really a treat as I got to see and learn so many new things. The activities we did included meeting and bonding with other members and even having a recycle redesign flash challenge using unconventional items. The photo featuring the dress with the women’s symbol is the design my team made, inspired by brave women.
FIDM Alumna Angela Johnson owns FABRIC where the event was held. Angela designs ball gowns from recycled t-shirts—you should definitely check her out on Instagram and Facebook @tshirtballgown @fabrictempe.
She was very sweet and gave us a tour to show what FABRIC has to offer. We got to experience the inside and outside of the unique building. It’s the first of its kind in Arizona, which is so cool! The building used to be an old theater and has many rooms with different functions.
There is a fabric store, graphic design printing room, rows of sewing machines, textile creation software, uniquely designed offices, meeting rooms, a humongous fabric cutting station, a makeup/hair room, recording studio, photography room, a runway, and so much more!
Small and upcoming designers can use the FABRIC facility to manufacture their products locally, rather than overseas, and showcase their pieces in the many shows FABRIC hosts.
My favorite part of the day was learning that FABRIC gives back to the community. Angela told us that they have a program in which disabled adults with autism or Down syndrome can learn to sew and make tote bags from retired Arizona State University banners. In fact, they are so popular that they are on backorder at the ASU Tempe Student Store! I love that they are providing a service to the community. That really touched my heart and I couldn’t help but want that to be heard.
