Hear about the six pieces she designed and produced!
Newbury Park High School FIDM Fashion Club President, Melody Hellard, chats with us about the inspiration behind her collection.
I was inspired to create this six-piece collection one night when I was thinking about what makes up the true fabric of fashion. I came to the realization that this was our body, and that the body is what makes fashion design possible and inspires designers to create. This is the central topic I chose to explore in my collection.
Each piece features a body part of some kind in the design that is exaggerated with bright colors and interesting shapes. I was inspired by Twiggy’s iconic eye makeup and 1960s Mod. My goals for this project were to create something, bold, artistic, and unique that reflected my personal design style. I purposefully made the designs very loud so that it would exaggerate the body parts, but also be fun and exciting, while stand out as fashion design rather than everyday wear.
I used the same fabrics throughout the collection and worked on keeping it very cohesive and true to the style I was aiming for. Every piece is designed, patterned and sewn by myself and finished with cut out pieces of vinyl to create an image, or pained with a blend of acrylic paint and textile medium. When I enrolled in AP 3-D art this year I chose to do Fashion Design as my primary focus and saw this as a good opportunity to produce the line.
I am enjoying being a Fashion Club president. The best parts are definitely the fun events put on by FIDM and gathering a group of kids who share a love for fashion and art. This year my club did many fun activities such as heat press t-shirts, fashion sketching, Barbie homecoming dresses, painting denim, learning embroidery, and now we are designing dresses for prom that we will also make for Barbie and Ken the week before prom.
My ultimate career goal is to be able to create for the rest of my life. I love fashion and costume design, and especially love creating formal wear. I also create stage puppets and participate in performing arts at my school. I will most likely one day open my own clothing business or costume shop for theatre and film. I could also see myself as a high end wedding gown designer or do couture runway shows.
