FC Pres Chassidy Bell tells us about her plans for her upcoming fashion show.
Rags to Runway is Marina High School’s annual fashion show hosted by the Marina KIWIN’S Club and FIDM Fashion Club. The show will take place February 10th from 5:30-8:00 PM at school, and this year the theme is Hollywood Glam meets Great Gatsby.
Kelly Ma, the president of KIWIN’S Club, has worked tirelessly alongside me to plan the fashion show, which will consist of a catwalk runway, auction (different outfits from the runway show), and thrift shop. All proceeds will be donated to Stop Hunger Now, this year’s charity of choice.
It is free to the public, but food, drinks, crafts and raffle tickets will be sold. Games can also be played, which also help raise money for the cause. The thrift shop will be selling clothes for 50 cents to $3.
FIDM Fashion Club will be donating six jewelry pieces by FIDM Alumna and Jewelry Designer Chan Luu and a $300 voucher to 3 Days of Fashion, thanks to the generosity of Talia Tonti and Barbara Daily.
We are inviting other clubs to fundraise by selling food, drinks, and crafts, the proceeds of which they can either keep or donate to Stop Hunger Now. In order to participate, we do require clubs to donate a gift basket for the raffle, which benefits the charity.
Our fashion show is not necessarily to showcase designs nor certain trends; it is all for fun and a great cause. It makes us feel good to give back to our community in a creative way. The best feeling is when we get good feedback, and see the way our event brings people together to raise awareness and support after months of hard work.
Rags to Riches was an idea sparked five years ago, to fulfill our club’s purpose from a past KIWIN’S member, Betty Nguyen, and it has been an annual tradition ever since. My fashion club has dreamed of putting on our own show but didn’t have the support needed. Fortunately, KIWIN’S Club reached out and welcomed us with open arms.
KIWIN’S is part of a student-led non-profit international organization called Key Club. The club’s main purpose is to not only inspire character building, help other develop leadership skills, and enforce the importance of inclusiveness, but to also raise money and awareness for causes we believe in.
In preparation for the big day, we will be having a few clothing drives for our runway and thrift shop. On an upcoming Sunday, we will have students pick out outfits they want to model (we are looking for about 20 models, 30 maximum). In advance of the show, we will be doing a dress rehearsal so the models can practice walking.
The following Saturday we are having a photo shoot with our models at a local location from 3 to 5 PM, the images of which we’ll use for promotional materials. In addition to flyers, we will be including the show on our individual club’s social media, the personal accounts of the board and members, the Marina KIWIN’S website, and our school website.
The major timeline of our show will go something like this—it will start with the set-up: tables, chairs, streamers, balloons, lighting, string lights, stage mic and sound system, posters, clothes in the thrift shop, red carpet. Then, photographers and models arrive: photographers take pictures of set-up; models get hair and makeup done and get dressed.
The doors will open to the public and raffle tickets will be sold for the gift baskets as well as food, beverages, and crafts. We will then begin the event with the introduction of the event and hosts and hear about Stop Hunger Now from a speaker. The runway show will begin, followed by live entertainment and then the auction.
Throughout the show we will have raffle drawings here and there. The thrift shop will be open before and after the show. Food sales will continue after the show until closing.
If you have the chance, please attend! The Rags to Runway charity fashion show is February 10th, 5:30-8:00 PM at Marina High School in Huntington Beach, California. All ages are welcome. It’s going to be a glamorous time!
