Make this Homecoming dance your personal catwalk!
Fall is here, which means it’s Homecoming season! If you haven’t already thought about what to wear, don’t worry, we’ve done all the hard work for you. We scoured endless photos from the Fall 2016 runways and pics of the hottest red carpet looks to find the dress trends that are gonna slay at Homecoming this year. You’re welcome, boo!
Dozens, and we mean dozens, of designers were feeling yellow this season, from Christian Siriano, Jason Wu, and Creatures of Comfort to Reem Acra, Narciso Rodriguez, Jeremy Scott, and countless others. We’ve seen Cookie, er, we mean Empire’s Taraji P. Henson in a yellow Vera Wang column dress at the Emmys, and Emma Stone wore a sweet little buttercup Chanel confection on the red carpet premiere of La La Land—proof that even though it’s kind of an unexpected hue for fall (we would think such a sunny shade would be more suitable for summer), it totally works RN and it’s perfect for special occasions like Homecoming.
2. Cold Shoulder
The cold shoulder trend is still going strong—Alexander McQueen, Tibi, Zimmerman, Proenza Schouler, and more all had bare-shouldered models on their Fall 2016 catwalks—and we’re totally here for it! We’ve seen stars like Kendall Jenner, Emily Ratajkowski, and even the Man Repeller herself, Leandra Medine has been photographed slaying in a cold shoulder frock. Here’s a pro tip from our experts: throw your hair up into a bun or ponytail to really show off your shoulders.
3. High Impact Sparkle
If it’s glamour you’re after, take a cue from designers like Jenny Packham, Christian Dior, Gucci, and Michael Kors, all of whom served up red carpet-ready looks dripping in shimmer and shine at their Fall 2016 shows. So many celebs had love for this trend at this year’s Emmys, from Emilia Clarke in Atelier Versace to America Ferrera in Jenny Packham, and the trend was a hit at the recent Toronto International Film Festival (our favorite look was Michelle Williams in a dazzling Louis Vuitton number). It’s unapologetically bold and glamorous, and definitely not for the shy, so if you rock this trend be prepared to turn heads.
From the tiny floral motifs at Giambattista Valli to the enormous bouquets at Dolce & Gabbana, Fall 2016 runways were littered with flower prints, and we’ve spotted floral dresses and gowns on the red carpet recently as well. Sarah Hyland looked flawless in a floral top and pants by FIDM Grad Monique Lhuillier, Kristen Bell was stunning in Zuhair Murad at the Emmy Awards, and Shailene Woodley wore a floral Valentino design to the Snowden premiere. The look is sweet and girly, and we promise you’ll look fab in all the Homecoming selfies you’ll be taking.
Little or long, there’s no denying the appeal of a black dress for a special occasion. Case in point, Lily-Rose Depp rocked a metallic woven LBD on the red carpet recently; Rooney Mara wore a cut-out black frock by Proenza Schouler to a movie premiere; Kaia Gerber accepted her Breakthrough Model award at the Daily Front Row’s Fashion Media Awards in an LBD; and even icons like Sarah Jessica Parker and Victoria Beckham have been spotted wearing one recently. LBDs are right for any occasion, and for any body type. Srsly, you can’t go wrong!
