Five student designers created 31 original looks!
We recently caught up with Saint Monica HS FIDM Fashion Club Co-Pres Bailey Liu to hear all about their successful fashion show!
Tell us about your recent fashion show. What were some of the highlights?
My most recent, first ever fashion show was on May 8, 2019. It was held in our school gym. We had five different designers, a total of 24 models, and 31 outfits. This was an open event for all students and faculties during school hours. The highlight of the show was how each designers’ designs turned out so different than other designers, yet it was a cohesive show.
We heard there was a lot of sewing for the fashion show.
All of our designs are original. We either upcycled clothes to make something new or started from scratch. Lots of my designs are made out of scratch, so there was lots of sewing, hand sewing, included my process of making all of my designs. We had a few sewing sessions where we invited parents to teach us how to sew, but all of the sewing or crafting on the designs were done by designers. We were planning since November.
What activities or events do you hope to do with Fashion Club next year?
We will be doing another fashion show (or two) again next year. I hope to do more fundraiser events because fashion shows cost money to produce. And I believe if we have more funds in our club, we will have the opportunity to do more activities such as t-shirt painting, taking a field trip to museums, and viewing design exhibits.
What are the most rewarding parts of being in a Fashion Club?
I think to be able to work on something I’m passionate about is one of the most rewarding parts of being in a Fashion Club. After the fashion show, we received many compliments about the show; this made me feel proud of being in the club. I remember after the fashion show, an underclassman who was not in the club came up to me and asked me if she could join the Fashion Club and talked to me about how she now liked fashion. I feel proudest being able to inspire others.
