Orting High School FIDM Fashion Club President and Nordstrom Ambassador
Most people would describe me as “the fashionista,” and sometimes “the hippie,” thanks to my bohemian-based style. I’m a cheerleader and the president of Fashion Club at my small town school! My favorite things outside of school are pulling clothes for and modeling in runway shows, working at Aeropostale as a Style Specialist, and going to concerts.
I love social media and marketing! You can follow me on Instagram @theycallmerissa! I’m also a Nordstrom Ambassador where I’m learning even more about the fashion industry! I have an amazing eye for trend and brand. Trends I raged about last year have popped up as “Top 3 BTS trends” in Nordstrom’s launch this year.
People often look at me funny because I’ll point out where their outfit is from. I’m even better on celebrities and TV characters. I’ll be watching a show and I’ll say, “Oh! That’s from American Apparel!” or “See what she’s wearing? That’s from Nasty Gal.” Sometimes it’s from the style or vibe of the item but other times because I know store’s inventory so well.
I hope to get my degree in Fashion Marketing and get a job as either a buyer or a stylist. My dream job would be working as a set stylist for a TV show or movie or styling for a performer.
I started an official FIDM Fashion Club chapter at my high school to increase awareness of the broad fashion industry. A rep from FIDM gave a presentation to my Fashion and Textiles class. A year after learning about starting your own Fashion Club chapter I finally decided to go for it. I knew I would learn tons about the industry and would gain valuable experience from it. I was so right. The domino effect of opportunities that arose after creating this club was unimaginable. I wouldn’t be here with all these great experiences and knowledge under my belt if it weren’t for starting my own chapter.
My awe of fashion comes from its ability to create an emotion, persona, and confidence. Fashion is empowering and enables you to feel like your best self—it’s a form of expression. You can tell a lot about someone by what they’re wearing. Kind of like how fashion changes by season (color, texture, and item), the outfit someone wears can reflect their current mood. I am constantly intrigued by the role of fashion in the world, society, and everyday life.
My personal style is very hard to pinpoint. I spend so much time analyzing trends that I inhabit almost all of them. My style is definitely bohemian-based and highly inspired by the ‘70s. Some of the names I derive my style from are Savannah Hudson, Amanda Steele, and Rydel Lynch.
