California cool hair for the summer!
It’s officially summer, and the must-have hair of the moment is breezy, beachy waves. While the look is certainly not new—for some, it’s a summertime staple year after year—it’s definitely hot, hot, hot for the summer of ‘17, and it showed up on a ton of runways.
From textured tousles to relaxed ringlets, we spotted some version of this carefree cool-girl hair at Tory Burch, Derek Lam, Alexander Wang, and several others. Philosophy di Lorenzo showed a Blue Lagoon-inspired collection, and models strutted the runway in Brooke Shields-like tousled locks; and at Sonia Rykiel, hairstylist Paul Hanlon created fuzzy, Rykiel-inspired waves as an homage to the late designer.

Besides the runways in New York, Paris, and Milan, perfectly tousled, beachy waves are a mainstay among some of the most stylish celebs this season. Stars like Chrissy Teigen, Gisele Bundchen, and Gigi Hadid have all been photographed on the red carpet and on the street with this super laid-back style. And we certainly can’t forget about Blake Lively and Zoe Saldana, both of whom have made beachy waves their signature look. (We die for Saldana’s look on the June issue of Shape.

Want to try the trend? You can start with your own natural texture and use a curling iron to add more volume and texture if necessary (which will definitely be the case if you have naturally stick-straight hair). Products such as sea salt spray, styling foam, or a texturizing pomade will instantly add texture and hold, and give your strands a cool piece-y look. Pros like hairstylist James Pecis, who created the looks at Zero + Maria Cornejo, use a Marcel iron and texturizing paste, then lots of scrunching and zhoosing with their hands to manipulate the hair.
