Not your basic braids!
Braids had a huge moment on the Spring 2017 runways, popping up at countless shows, including Roberto Cavalli, A Detacher, Valentino, and Christian Dior, but it’s the embellished braids—plaits adorned with everything from colorful string to faux pearls—that we’ve spotted on several runways and celebrities that have our total attention this season.
Actress Teyonah Parris, Rita Ora, Actress Shay Mitchell
Shay Mitchell’s braided topknot embellished with gold rings caused quite a frenzy at the 2016 Teen Choice Awards (more recently, the PLL beauty hit Coachella with metallic ribbon woven into her fishtail braid), and at a screening for her show, Survivor’s Remorse, actress Teyonah Parris was major hair goals with her floral embellished braids. Besides these two, celebrities, fashion designers, and tastemakers including Ariana Grande, Christina Aguilera, John Galliano, and Myesha Polnett are all fans of the look.

Want to try the trend? Vamping up your French or milkmaid braids, fishtails, or cornrows is super easy and so fun. Simply weave colorful ribbon or string into your hair as you’re braiding, or tuck embellished bobby pins or hair clips into the braid once it’s done (think faux flowers or pearls, shiny rhinestones, etc). Another option is to wrap hair cuffs around parts of your braid—they’re just like ear cuffs and have the same cool effect. If you really want to keep it simple, but still very pretty, tie a piece of tulle or ribbon at the end of your braid like the models at the Schiaparelli Spring 2017 Couture show.
