No cure needed for these summertime blues!
It’s been over a year since we first started spotting blue eye makeup popping up on the runways, but it seems this trend is only gaining momentum, reaching a high note for Summer and also Fall ‘17. Designers, including Christian Siriano, N21, Victoria Beckham, and Giorgio Armani incorporated blue eye makeup into the beauty looks at their S/S 2017 shows, then we saw more on the Fall 2017 runways at Versus Versace, Vivienne Westwood, who had makeup artists do an electric teal all around her models’ eyes, and Mary Katrantzou, where makeup artist Lynsey Alexander actually bleached the models’ eyebrows to make the baby blue eyeshadow pop even more!

IRL, we’ve witnessed A-listers and tastemakers rocking the blue eye makeup trend too. From the graphic cobalt liner we spotted on Lily Collins to the pop of turquoise seen on Joan Smalls’ lids, top celebrity makeup artists have been hooking their clients up with these runway-inspired looks all season. Beauty campaigns and magazine spreads have also featured the look—Kristen Stewart sports a dramatic navy smokey eye in the Chanel Summer 2017 makeup ads, and a recent issue of Vogue Portugal features a Dolce & Gabbana spread in which the model’s eyelids are washed with the prettiest baby blue shadow.

Want to try the trend? This look is so easy to pull off, especially since there are so many shades of blue to choose from, and you can opt to use as much or as little color as you like. If you’re not quite sure, start with a little liner or mascara in a flattering shade of turquoise or navy (both of which look amazing on every skin tone and are exceptional when paired with goldtone eyeshadow), and as you get more comfortable, start to incorporate a touch of blue eyeshadow for more depth. And of course you can always draw inspiration from the pros: before summer comes to a close channel your inner mermaid and do an aqua-hued cat eye just like Em Rat’s, or pick up an eyeshadow palette and play around with the blue hues to create a denim-colored smokey eye like Aja Naomi King.
