The classic mani got remixed for Fall ‘17.
The French manicure is classic (so classic, it dates all the way back to the 18th century!), clean, and pretty, and will always have a special place in the hearts of mani enthusiasts. But for Fall 2017, designers including Prabal Gurung, Tanya Taylor, Sachin and Babi, and Michael Costello, reimagined the classic white-tipped mani with bold colors and designs.

Rihanna has proven to be a fan of the remixed mani style, having recently rocked a Frenchie with leopard print–yes, leopard print!– tips to a red carpet event, and an extra-long classic French manicure to the 2017 Grammy Awards. Other celebs and beauty insiders who have favored the look include Jessica Biel, Kaley Cuoco, Kelly Osbourne, Hailee Steinfeld, models Erin Wasson and Alessandra Ambrosio, and Kerry Washington, and all of them have added their own twist to the classic, whether it was updating the colors to bold black and white or painting the white tip in the shape of a heart (aww, so cute!)

Want to try the trend? Use your imagination and think up some unexpected color combinations that will really wow, like gray and pink or navy and gold. Or go for neon, jewel tone, or glitzy metallic tips. If you’re into the classic Frenchie, with a pinkish neutral base and white tips, opt for an updated shape, like stiletto, extra-long, or coffin. Use nail polish to create a ‘V’ tip or make a diagonal line instead of the classic rounded line, or get creative with decals, which can easily elevate a basic, white and neutral French manicure. Just remember to use a nail polish barrier or nail polish pens, both of which can help with precise application, and of course a good top coat to keep the tips from chipping. And if you need inspiration, we found tons of fresh new ways to wear a French manicure on Instagram and Pinterest.
