The Ruby Slipper Collection

Instead of a trip to Kansas, what if three heel clicks could have taken Dorothy seventy years into the future? Poppies may have put her to sleep, but the recent “Ruby Slipper Collection” exhibition at FIDM would have left her breathless.

Nineteen of the world's most famous shoe designers participated in "The Ruby Slipper Collection" exhibition at FIDM Museum & Galleries in celebration of the 70th Anniversary of Warner Bros.' The Wizard of Oz. With the inspiration of the film as their guide, the noted designers let their imaginations soar as they created modern versions of Dorothy’s classic Ruby Slippers. The nineteen designers included: A. Testoni, Abaete, Alberta Ferretti, Betsey Johnson, Botkier, Christian Louboutin, Diane von Furstenberg, Giuseppe Zanotti, Jimmy Choo, L.A.M.B. by Gwen Stefani, Lisa Pliner, Manolo Blahnik, Moschino, Oscar de la Renta, Roger Vivier, Sergio Rossi, Stuart Weitzman, Tibi, and Tuleh.

Jimmy Choo

The designers were given access to unlimited Swarovski crystals to use in their designs. The use of red snakeskin and zip up heels ring true to Jimmy Choo’s sleek rocker chic look. Now if we could just talk Dorothy into wearing something other than that blue checkered pinafore.

Christian Louboutin

Christian Louboutin’s dramatic pumps enjoyed their moment in the spotlight. The red satin spindles echo the turned up toes on the shoes of some of the Munchkins in the film. And the ankle flourish resembles the petals of a poppy.

L.A.M.B. by Gwen Stefani

No doubt these pretty platforms are L.A.M.B. by Gwen Stefani. She tells her sweet, edgy point of view through the fabric-swathed wooden stilettos all cinched up with a bow at the ankle.

Kaddie Lam

FIDM held a Footwear Design Student Contest to select a winner to complete the celebrated roster as the 20th shoe designer in the “Ruby Slipper Collection.” Kaddie Lam competed with the best and won the contest with her gorgeous design on the left! Notice the wrapped heel reminiscent of the swirling tornado in the film.
