In the picture at right, Aishwarya is wearing a gold-trimmed sari, the traditional woman's garment of India. The sari has no seams. It is merely 5 1/2 meters (6 yards) of cloth wrapped around the body. Underneath the sari, women wear a long slip with a drawstring waistband and a short fitted blouse called a choli, so if it comes unwrapped, you're not naked! | Above, Aishwarya and her sisters wear simple white pajamas that look fresh and clean. At right, the girls wear the salwar kameez, another classic Indian look. The salwar, or pajama-like pant, are tight at the waist and ankles. The kameez is long loose shaped tunic. The scarf worn across the front of the kameez is called a dupatta. Many Indian girls find the salwar kameez more practical for daily wear than the sari. |

A new twist on Jane Austen's classic Pride and Prejudice, Bride & Prejudice replaces Austen's prim and proper corsets with saris and salwars and livens everything up with the elaborate musical numbers that Indian films are known for. At the center of this fun romantic comedy is Indian cinema's reigning queen, Aishwarya Rai, in her first English language pic opposite rising English star Martin Henderson, with Daniel Gillies (Tobey McGuire's arch enemy in Spiderman II) as bad boy Wickham. |
