Fashion Club President Has Dreams of Becoming a Fashion Designer

Her fashion world opened up when she started her club!

Odyssey Aquinchay
President, Sun Valley High School Fashion Club

Tell us a little about yourself: Ever since I was in diapers, everyone knew I was going to be in the fashion industry. Fashion has always been one of my strong passions. As the years passed I didn't know exactly what aspect of the industry I wanted to pursue—I went from wanting to be a model, to fashion photography, now I'm focused on fashion design! I'm really big on self expression, and I strongly believe that fashion is the best way to express yourself. The simplest T-shirt can make the loudest statement or spark a new friendship or relationship. Fashion is my muse—it's my way of letting people know who I am, and how driven I am towards my dreams. Nothing else gives me that satisfaction!

How did you get involved in Fashion Club at your high school? I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York :) I always knew that I wanted a career in fashion, but I never knew which aspect I wanted to pursue. Once I graduated from the eighth grade I was set that I wanted to pursue a career in fashion and I applied to the High School of Fashion Industries in New York City. However, at the end of my eighth-grade year I moved to North Carolina, where I KNEW that I wouldn't have as many opportunities as I would in New York City. I was new my freshman year, new to high school, new to this county, new to the entire state! When I enrolled at Sun Valley there weren't many courses that related to fashion except Art I. Fashion Merchandising was for sophomores and upperclassmen. I knew that I wasn't the only student at Sun Valley who wanted a career in fashion. So, late 2010 I found FashionClub.com and I started the process of launching our own club! It took awhile to find an advisor, but now we have two! We officially started in mid-January with 9 people. We're up to 17 committed members now!!

What’s it like being the Fashion Club President? So far my experience as the President of the club has gone sooooo well! It's the best feeling in the world to know that you're influencing 17 people to follow their dreams, and not let anyone tell them they can’t do something.

What are your upcoming plans for your Sun Valley High School Fashion Club? Our biggest upcoming event is our Sun Valley Fashion Week we want to plan. We want to mirror NY Fashion Week, just within our school. We look forward to having a huge fashion show/party in our student parking lot, a dress-to-impress day, one day donated to the fashion charity "Fashion For All," an organization that provides low income women with fashionable accessories, cosmetics, etc, and many other ideas are flowing!!!

What’s a fashion trend you’re loving right now? I have an awkward type of style. I wouldn't call it a style at all actually. I don't really follow any particular trends. I wear what expresses who I am. I have a pair of 8-eye black Doc Martens that I wear FAITHFULLY. LOOOL. Lately, I've been wearing older jeans that I found in my closet and thought I'd never wear. Also, now that I'm getting more experience with my sewing machine I've been making crop tops, and following DIY projects I find on blogs/online. I learn more about my style every day, I take so many risks with my clothing but, hey, you gotta risk it to get the biscuit! :) I've come to a point in my life where I no longer care what people think of me or the way I dress. I wear what I like and what I know suits me. I was never big on fashion trends anyway. I’ve always followed my own little beat!

What fashion websites/blogs do you love? I have a TON of websites and blogs. As far as the websites: Etsy, Karma Loop, Forever21, studsandspikes.com, etc. Fashion blogs: yslaurent.tumblr.com, vogueweekend.tumblr.com, lookbookdotnu.tumblr.com, boulevardmode.tumblr.com, thegirlnextdior.tumblr.com, internationalfashionista.tumblr.com, just to name a few! :)

What inspires you? Some of my inspiration comes from my Tumblr blog: audereestfaceree.tumblr.com. I follow the most amazing and inspiring fashionistas you can ever imagine, each of them has inspired at least one of my designs. However, the majority of my inspiration comes from my mother. My mom has ALWAYS been there for me and my family regardless of the circumstances and I can completely respect her and love her for that.

Do you have plans to attend FIDM? I have a very open mind about which colleges I'm applying to. However, FIDM is on my list! You guys offer SO Much for high school students looking for experience and opportunities, I'm so grateful for FIDM and Fashion Club, without this opportunity all 18 of us would be in a hole! Thank you SOOOOO much FIDM! :]
