Fashion Club President Making a Difference in
Her Community
Volunteers in Three Organizations
Rosa Wan
President, Granite Hills High School Fashion Club
Tell us a little about yourself: I am proud to be the president of such a spectacular club! I have a love affair with vintage finds and high-end fashion, even though I can't possibly afford it. I try to dress up every day, and I encourage others to, also. I have grand dreams and aspirations, and I work my way towards that little by little by taking difficult classes. I love volunteering my time, and I am in three assistance organizations.
How did you get involved with FC at your high school? I was not aware that we even had a Fashion Club my freshman year. The week before summer, I heard something about it in the announcements, and I decided to attend the meeting. Immediately, the president asked if I would like to carry on the club. I was more than happy to oblige.
Tell us about your experience as the president of your FC: I have had the best time. I've had a few well-dressed students come up to me, asking about what they can consider for long-term plans in life and whatnot. There was even a foreign exchange student who said, "Are you THE Rosa Wan?" I love how this club inspires young people to think more about their futures, whether it be in the fashion and art field or not. This is what matters in times like these.
What do you love about your FC? I love how this club can give a broad range of options to students who do not know what they will do after high school, and how it can inspire people to pursue a world beyond just basic fashion. It provides confidence to many, and it will keep some on the road to college.
What kinds of activities do you do at your FC meetings? We discuss, plan, and brainstorm; then, we take a chunk of time to incorporate everyone by having them show off their snazzy outfits.
How is your FC going to make a difference in your community? I am working on linking Fashion Club with the Assistance League of Victor Valley, a nonprofit organization with a teen volunteer chapter and an affordable and cozy thrift shop. I am also a member of this organization, and we give our time and supply clothes to less fortunate children, families, and women who are victims of domestic abuse. I am also trying to develop a coalition between us and the National Honor Society and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
What are your upcoming plans? We are planning to have a car wash, decorate Speedos for the boys' water polo team, help the Renaissance Club with their Transformer-themed outfits in their upcoming rally, attend the DEBUT Runway Show and Fashion Club Pre-Party, help first graders give a private fashion show featuring them as models at Yucca Loma Elementary School, and hold the 2nd Annual Fashion Show at our school!
What’s a fashion trend you’re loving right now? I'm loving many trends, such as cargo/military, modern classic/minimalism, block heels and Jeffrey Campbell platforms(!), return of the ‘60s and ‘70s, equestrian-themed clothing, and mostly, the return of the lady. (:
What is your favorite thing in your wardrobe? My favorite thing in my wardrobe, by far, is a vintage ‘60s bohemian dress. It's beaded and embroidered, all on plush cocoa velvet!
Who is your style icon? I have too many style icons. Probably my top are: Karl Lagerfeld, Jane Aldridge, Carey Mulligan, Grace Coddington, Gabrielle Chanel, Lauren Santo Domingo, Anna Wintour, the Olsen sisters, and Abbey Lee Kershaw.
What fashion websites/blogs do you love? I post on Chictopia, Lookbook, and Weardrobe, and I'm on my way to my own style blog and an account on Polyvore. I absolutely love to read (and fawn over): Another Day to Dress Up, Fallie, Olsens Anonymous, Vogue, W, Nylon, Bryanboy, Ringo, Have A Banana, New York Mag, Net-A-Porter, Barneys NY, Fade To Black, Fake Karl, Asos, Jak&Jil, Style Rookie, The Stylish Wanderer, Style Bubble, All the Pretty Birds, Stockholm Street Style, Hanneli, The Sartorialist, Fashion Toast, White Lightning, and Sea of Shoes. Too many, I know!
What inspires you? I get inspired when I'm in the car, passing through anywhere. Keeping my eyes ferociously open, I see so much. Also old movies, kind deeds, and unexpected smiles.
