Karen Maldonado, FIDM Fashion Club President at Sky Islands High School in Tucson, Arizona shares how she’s staying inspired during the coronavirus pandemic.
How are you personally staying inspired right now? These past few months I’ve been staying inspired by watching old movies or thinking about how I would modernize the clothes used in the film. Since I want to go into product development, I like challenging myself using this tactic of making vintage clothes more suitable for this market. More recently, movies from the 1970s have been catching my eye, especially the ones based around disco.
Are there specific brands or personalities you admire who are showing leadership during this health crisis? Timberland has shown so much support not only for COVID-19 relief, but other areas that affect us all. John Krasinski providing us with Some Good News was definitely a breath of fresh air for lots of people. His wholesome content really did inspire people all over the world to stay safe and positive.
Have you held any virtual FIDM Fashion Club meetings? My club did have virtual meetings through Google Hangouts as we found it to be more convenient for us since we could just casually text without having the stress of a video call. The meetings themselves went pretty smoothly and we didn’t have much trouble getting in contact with the members, although the projects we were working on at school were halted; we are planning on moving those projects to next school year.
Do you have any tips for staying connected during this challenging time? Staying connected with members hasn’t been difficult for my club because most of us are already friends who frequently talk. As for tips, I would just continue to keep members in my club interested and generating ideas so we can make up for lost time next year.
