How I’m Staying Inspired: Miriam Ruvalcaba

Fashion Club President designs her own prom dress

Miriam Ruvalcaba, FIDM Fashion Club President at Animo Inglewood Charter High School in Inglewood, California, shares how she’s staying inspired during the coronavirus pandemic.

How are you personally staying inspired right now? I’ve been staying inspired during this quarantine by doing DIYs, painting, and having photoshoots. During quarantine I was able to design and get my prom dress made which I was super excited for, but since that won’t be happening I had a cool photoshoot to show off what I designed. Watching shows like The Carrie Diaries and reading books related to the fashion industry like Making it in Manhattan by Caroline Vazzana are keeping me inspired. This book has taught me how to build connections in the fashion industry by working as an intern and building my brand. It’s keeping me inspired and excited to attend FIDM because it’s something that I’ve been dedicated to for so long, and now I’ll be attending my dream school.

Are there specific brands or personalities you admire who are showing leadership during this health crisis? Christian Siriano and his team have donated thousands of masks to health workers since the mask shortage. Someone else that I really admire is Lady Gaga because she raised $127 million dollars for coronavirus relief with “One World: Together at Home,” which was split between the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund and local and regional responders. She is using her platform in a very positive way to help people, which is amazing.

Do you have any tips for staying connected during this challenging time? Some tips I have to stay connected with members is by checking up on them, letting them know about the @fidmfashionclub takeover Stories, and reminding them about scholarship opportunities. We send each other TikToks related to fashion or DIYs to keep us motivated.
